Farm Animal Veterinary Services for Smallholders across Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire.
However large or small your herd or flock we can provide a tailored, annual plan of action with regards to worming, vaccination and review the health status of your animals. This can be a useful time to discuss any issues on farm, review appropriate medicine usage and focus on animal husbandry.
Our vets are happy to advise on all husbandry issues from housing and nutrition to more specific health advice. We provide phone call advice as well as in person visits so however small or large your query, please get in touch.
For more in-depth discussions surrounding husbandry and more, consider a health plan visit, or have a look at the upcoming Smallholder Club talks.
In May 2022, we launched our new Smallholder’s Club. The first talk covered common diseases and treatment, sparking lots of discussion between owners of small herds of cows, sheep, goats, chickens, alpacas and more! We have lots of topics in mind for upcoming events, including the sheep year, top tips on showing, lambing husbandry, parasitism, poultry, enrichment and more – but we are always keen to hear more ideas. We hope the group will become a great place to share knowledge and ideas (and vaccines!) and gain some valuable advice from our vets and vet techs.
As part of the club, clients can choose to become members. For the discounted price of £50, members will receive the following:
We perform many routine surgical procedures including castration, vasectomy and emergency surgery where required. We are happy to disbud goats on farm or in the surgery. We also perform routine surgeries including castration.
All our vets are enthusiastic and dedicated farm vets. We provide our own 24-hour emergency service always with a smile on our faces!
Our practice firmly believes that appropriately targeted post-mortem investigation can be a very valuable and quite economic tool for informing herd health and farm management decisions.
We have a dedicated post-mortem room at the Sturminster surgery where we can perform economic sheep/goat, poultry/game bird or cattle youngstock post-mortems. We can also perform post-mortem investigation on smaller animals (sheep/goats/calves) on farm if this is more convenient.
For adult cattle post-mortem investigations, we generally advise that these are carried out either at a fallen stock centre such as SecAnim or at the hunt kennels as a thorough investigation on farm is rarely possible.
All post-mortems should be performed as promptly after death as is practical.
Our in-house laboratory offers worm egg and coccidia counts, milk sample culture and somatic cell count testing, haematology, biochemistry and investigation of external parasites.
Lucie joined the team as a vet tech this year and has a particular interest in sheep work. She has been pivotal in developing our new sheep packages for smaller flocks and vaccination and fly control rounds (see package offers below). She has a huge amount of shepherding experience so please don’t hesitate to ask for help, whatever the size of your flock.
