The importance of calving heifers in at 24 months or younger for increased milk yields, longevity and profitability is well reported. Youngstock are the future of our dairy herds and the rearing of heifer replacements is a crucial component of herd management. Rearing heifer calves is the second largest annual expense after feed with no income until the first lactation and no profit until the second.
The Youngstock Discussion group aims to improve production and profitability for your future herd. Membership of the group includes regular calf weighing sessions, colostrum transfer testing and quarterly on-farm meetings. Farmers really like to know that their calves are on track, and if they aren’t then it soon becomes an area of focus to get growth rates back up. The group is well established with over 20 members, and this generates excellent discussion at our regular meetings to exchange ideas. The data is also very useful when the whole farm team gets together for focused calf meetings.
Please call the practice for more information, or if you would be interested in joining the group.
