Calving Course

One-day small group, practical course aimed at farm staff who are new or feel inexperienced when calving cows.

About the course

This is a popular, one-day, practical course, held on a host farm. It is aimed at anyone who works with cattle or owns cattle and wishes to gain experience or requires a refresher in this area. We also can offer this as a dual language course, with either Polish or Romanian interpreters as required.

Students will learn…

  • The normal calving process – to include both the physical and behavioural changes, what to look for and how long this should take.
  • When to intervene – often one of the most asked questions, so we cover this in detail, to help attendees optimise cow and calf health and vitality.
  • How to intervene – we teach what to do, how to minimise infection, how to recognise a problem and how to assess the presentation of the calf.
  • How and when to assist – with the use of our practical demonstration tools you can learn how to apply ropes, correct malpresentations, use the calving jack safely and deliver a calf.
  • When to seek assistance – it is not a failure to call a vet for help, we discuss at what point this should become an option.
  • How to resuscitate a calf.
  • Cow and calf aftercare- including colostrum management, stomach tubing, pain relief and recognition of common diseases.
